Dickson Makwinja is an ABMA student currently in employment whilst undertaking an ABMA qualification in Professional Computing and Information Technology. A student at Don Bosco Youth Technical Centre during 2007 and 2008, Dickson has learned practical skills that will enhance his career and he is already looking at how to further increase his career prospects by continuing his studies to Advanced Diploma level.
Whilst studying with the ABMA, Dickson has been working as an IT Technician for the Centre for Social Concern, a Malawi based project and part of the Missionaries of Africa.
Here he tells us of his experiences as an ABMA student:
Are ABMA studies relevant to your chosen career?
I enjoyed studying Professional Computing and Information Technology, particularly computer architecture, database management and business communication. These areas of my studies have been particularly valuable in my role as an IT Technician. Computer architecture allows me to help my co-workers if they are having problems. As well as repairing computers I work together with my colleagues as a data entry clerk when it is needed.
How have employers responded to your international qualification from the ABMA?
I started working for the Centre for Social Concern in 2009 after pursuing my Diploma 2 qualification in Professional Computing and Information Technology. My employer values the work I am doing because servicing computers is of real benefit to the organisation.
What advantages do you think an ABMA qualification gives you in the job market?
I can see that I have a bright future with my ABMA qualification. All organisations need computer technicians regardless of what the organisation does. There is a need for skilled people and I feel it is easy to get a job with an ABMA Diploma level qualification.
ABMA qualifications are valuable for students abroad as being recognised worldwide. The dissertation element of my ABMA studies improved my organisation and research skills which are important for everyone.
Would you recommend ABMA Diplomas to other students?
ABMA Diplomas help many students to be independent and ABMA students will not regret their studies. The dissertation has helped me to improve my research skills and it encourages students to work hard and be well organised particularly in working to deadlines. The dissertation also helps students work independently and feel more capable in their roles.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to go further with my education so that I can reach degree level. I am currently studying my Advanced Diploma in Professional Computing and Information Technology. I would like to study Information Technology at degree level and after that use my skills to work as a website designer or if God allows I will set up my own company repairing computers and installing software.
